Comedy Night Fundraiser a Rollicking Success

Paul Venier

April 5, 2008

The DIGS Volleyball Club hosted its fourth (mostly annual) Comedy Night Fundraiser to a large and enthusiastic audience on Friday, April 4, netting almost $7,000 to support the club's programs and operations.

The event was attended by 135 parents and friends at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey.

This years lead act was Paul Venier, a nationally recognized comedian who had the crowd laughing for close to two hours.  Paul's resume includes opening for or performing with Jay Leno, Jackie Mason, Phyllis Diller, Soupy Sales, Jethro Tull, Lou Reed, Cheap Trick, Howie Mandell, and Don Rickles.

Prizes included a "50/50" raffle, gift baskets, an LCD TV, door prizes, and many other items.  Some prizes were won by families who were away at the Northeast Qualifier that weekend.

Just as significant, the event was a thoroughly enjoyable social event for the club's parent body.

This year's fundraising committee, chaired by Dianne Bal, showed tremendous creative ingenuity in fashioning a beautiful environment of decorations, done with a very small budget.  Designs and decorations were managed by Nellie Bradshaw, Regina Hanrahan and Beth O'Neill.

Donations were managed by Cheryl Breitbart, Donna Chu, Mary Beth Cottrell, Josie Dvorken, and Lyn Hirsch.  Baskets were managed by Martha Brito, Fran Puleo, and Marie Sullivan.  Raffles were managed by Staci Blank, Nancy Daniels, Brian Jacks, and Kathy and Charles Kurtzke.

Other key members of the event committee included June McBain, coordinator, and Andy McBain, Master of Ceremonies, who has booked the performers and facility for all prior Comedy Nights as well and who serves as the Board officer responsible for fundraising.  Thanks also to Charlotte Castillo, club treasurer, who oversaw ticket receipts.

Our many thanks to these parents and to others who assisted with and attended the event!
